I always love to get the latest issue of Spanish AD. Apart from it being a beautiful magazine that overflows with great content, it usually includes the homes or work of people I know and it reminds me of my years in Spain, a country very dear to my heart.
No city quite captures the essence of Spain like Madrid, and the interiors scene there is both diverse and sophisticated, with rustic ‘aticos’ and grand, elegant ‘palacios’, and everything in between. The streets of central Madrid are lined with majestic buildings, ranging in style from the Baroque through to the Fascist style of the Franco years, and many contain large and beautifully proportioned apartments.
Today’s inspirational interior is one of those apartments. Flicking through the latest AD, I came across an interior I thought was very smart and was thrilled to discover it belongs to an old friend, Eric.
I’m not sure where to begin with what I love about this apartment. Yes, it is a fabulous, light-filled space with beautiful 19th Century proportions and detailing, the kind of thing we dream about here in the antipodes. I love the configuration of the kitchen and the curved wall. It’s the content, however and the way it’s layered together that’s really interesting. Within a monochromatic palette sits 20th Century furniture from Bugatti, Adnet and Jansen all the way through to Jasper Morrison, alongside oriental artwork and objects (a particular passion of the owner), modern sculpture and treasures both collected and inherited. The overall effect is one of incredible depth and nuance. It’s masculine, earthy and elegant – just how I would describe Spain. Enjoy!
