One designer whose work I constantly refer to for inspiration is Jacques Grange. Perhaps best known for his collaboration with Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Bergé on their various residences in France and Morocco, Grange’s interiors are layered, uber-sophisticated and beautiful, and his work always strikes me as being unaffected by what is popular and ‘in fashion’. Most would find it difficult to define his ‘style’ – without a doubt, the sign of a true maestro. You can look at a Grange interior from the 70’s, the 80’s, the 90’s, and now, and it’s hard to pinpoint which interior came before or after the next. There is just a common thread of understatement and balance, a relaxed sense of belonging, and of course that very French je ne sais quoi. It is spectacular – although you can’t really go wrong with a client who has multiple artworks by Bacon and Modigliani! Enjoy.
