We have in stock a fabulous pair of vintage Mushroom chairs by French designer, Pierre Paulin. Originally designed in 1959, and manufactured by Dutch company, Artifort, our chairs are the rare, larger size that have been out of production for decades. Newly reupholstered in a purple wool boucle, they look nothing short of spectacular. Not long ago I was flicking through Muriel Brandolini’s new book (The World of Muriel Brandolini) to see that she had also covered a pair of Mushroom chairs in a similar fabric for a client in Sag Harbour. Despite her style being so much more whimsical than my own, I just love any room that Muriel, the New York fashion-stylist-turned-interior-designer has had a hand in, and will be posting more about her in the near future. Going back to M. Paulin for a moment, when I lived in Madrid and first became aware of his work – he was still alive at the time – I remember being fascinated to learn that Paulin had redecorated the private apartments of the Palais de L’Elysee for president, George Pompidou in 1971. Paulin’s interiors in the Elysee were breathtaking to say the least, but looked much more ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ than ‘official world leader’s residence’. Only in France… As an Aussie it makes me think how wonderful it would be if Marc Newson was asked to redesign the Lodge!
